POLITICS
Vanuatu has a democratic government, with a President elected for five years by an electoral college comprising members of parliament and the presidents of regional councils. Parliament is unicameral, with 52 members of parliament elected by popular vote. Parliament is divided along strong party lines, with the Prime Minister being the leader of the most popular party. He selects a council of Ministers.
There is also a National Council of Chiefs that advises on custom and land matters.
