ELDER CARE MANAGER

Job Description

Division/Department: Communities

Location: Pitcairn Island

Job Title: Elder Care Manager

Reports to: Island Medical Officer (Doctor) - Appointed by Interview Panel

Wages: NZD60,000 per annum

Type of position: Full time (approx. 40 hours per week)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Pitcairn Islands are a British Overseas Territory and an archipelago of four small volcanic and coral islands in the remote South Pacific (Pitcairn, Oeno, Henderson, and Ducie Islands). Only the second largest island, Pitcairn, is inhabited, with approximately 40 permanent residents.

The population is ageing: 43% of the community (17 people) are pensioners (aged 65+).  By 2029 this will increase to over 60%.  Whilst we have an island doctor and nurse, in order to prepare for the future, we require additional support in the form of an elder care manager, to undertake assessments of care needs and provide support to those providing care (who are in some cases pensioners themselves).

The role requires 40 hours work per week.  The successful person will be flexible about how those hours are worked given the diverse needs of the community.  The work will need to be conducted in a range of locations, including peoples’ homes, the island’s clinic, and other government buildings.  A respectful, patient, caring attitude is therefore key.  In such a tiny community, where relationships and histories are long, confidentiality is vital, as are clear communication skills and the ability to deliver difficult messages in a sensitive and fair manner.

This role is for an initial period of six months, but there may be potential to extend it to one year.

The islands are governed by a Governor, Iona Thomas, who is based in New Zealand.  The island’s interests are represented by an elected body, the Council, which is headed by the Mayor.  In addition to the permanent residents, there is a Police Officer, seconded from New Zealand Police, a Doctor recruited internationally, and the Administrator, who is a UK Government Official representing the Governor.  Those undertaking these roles are normally accompanied by their partners.  Internationally-recruited staff such as this role are not permitted to be accompanied by their children during the posting to Pitcairn.
